100+ Non-Profits Join County's 9/11 Volunteer Expo

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - More than 100 non-profits have registered to participate in the county's Serve and Learn volunteer expo and are eager to match residents with local community service opportunities.

County Harvest, the Hispanic Resource Center, Furniture Sharehouse, Kids X-Press, and other non-profits will man booths at the Westchester County Center from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 where attendees can learn about the organizations' specific volunteer needs.

Alisa Kesten, the executive director of the Volunteer Center of United Way, said giving back was an appropriate way to honor the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"By connecting people with appropriate volunteer opportunities, we hope to provide a more constructive way to remember those we lost and those who rose up to serve after 9.11," Keston said in a press release. "There are hundreds of worthy non-profits in our area that need help, while there are thousands of local residents eager to find meaningful ways to give back."

The Volunteer Center of the United Way has crafted the Serve and Learn: Westchester Remembers 9/11 event to appeal to residents of all ages. The expo will offer on-site CPR training, blood donation stations, and an area where kids can create greeting cards for soldiers or veterans. Teens will be invited to a "Be the Change" workshop describing how young adults can use volunteer service to learn new skills.

Residents interested in attending Serve and Learn: Westchester Remembers 9/11 are encouraged to register online at www.volunteer-center.org or by calling (914) 948-4452. Attendees are asked to bring a can of food for the Montrose, VA Food Pantry.
