By preserving low-income housing units and renovating abandoned buildings, with the help of state-funded grants, Westhab has been able to fulfill its mission of providing housing for low-income populations across Westchester county.
"We have a clear mission that starts with building communities and developing affordable and supportive housing,” said Richard Nightingale, President and CEO of Westhab. “The other aspect is changing lives by offering services that complement the housing and improve the community."
Founded in 1981, Westhab began by renovating broken-down and vacant housing complexes across the area. Over the last 15 years, the company has focused on new construction, building over 2,500 units of housing and 1,000 rental units in Westchester.
While building is key to Westhab’s mission, volunteers work to help residents get back on their feet. "Building a sense of community and instilling pride within the houses is an important aspect of what we do," said Nightingale.
Westhab is also the leading job provider for public-assisted recipients in Westchester, having helped 550 people find jobs in 2015.
In addition to job assistance, Westhab provides educational services for resident youths. "We have nine after school programs including leadership training, SAT prep and college advisement," said Nightingale. "We want to help these brilliant and talented kids thrive, and empower them in the classroom and beyond."
