Westchester Public Workers Are Highest Paid In State

For those that always complain about government employees and what they are paid, the 2017 edition of “What They Make" is hot off the presses and Westchester County public employees hit the top of the list for both county and public employees.

Westchester County employees are top earners in the state according to a new study.

The report uses the latest county and municipal payroll information for fulltime and part-time workers actively enrolled in the pension system as of August 2017. The figures used included regular pay, overtime and pay for unused sick and vacation time.

However, the report doesn't include pension contributions, health insurance, and other fringe benefits that can add up to 35 percent or more in wage costs.

The report includes separate averages and totals for police and fire employees because they tend to make the highest salaries for government employees.

For county employees, Westchester came in first with 4,489 general employees making on average $75,359 annually.

Orange, $56,215

As for city general employees, Westchester also came in first with Yonkers topping the list with 1,081 employees making an average $81,313 annually.

Rye: $70,484
New Rochelle: $70,235
Peekskill: $67,029
White Plains: $61,411
