Treat your Dog to a Treat on National Dog Day

You can send him a card or throw him a party, but free doggy ice cream is a perfect way to celebrate your pooch on National Dog Day, Aug. 26.

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by the Animal Miracle Network to remind pet owners to celebrate the important roles dogs play in humans' lives. It honors dogs of all breeds -- from working dogs to family pets -- and encourages pet owners to honor their Fidos, Fifis and Rovers. And what better way to thank a dog than with a big, sloppy treat?

"We wanted to do something special to acknowledge the importance of dogs in our lives," says Deb Bennet, dog lover and owner, and spokesperson for Best Friends Pet Care. She adds: "We know most dogs love ice cream -- our 'treat truck tour' this summer was a big hit -- so we decided that giving away free ice cream to all our doggy friends would be a fun way to celebrate National Dog Day, too."

To celebrate this dog day of August, Best Friends will give a free doggy ice cream treat – made from yogurt or soy in tasty, dog-friendly flavors such as peanut butter, banana and honey -- to dogs visiting Best Friends locations in Harrison and White Plains. Canine guests must be on leash and accompanied by a human companion.

As to humans, whose appetite for ice cream is well known, no treats for you this time, but maybe your dog will treat you to a cone sometime soon – on National Human Day, perhaps?

How do you tell your dog that you love him or her? Please let me know.
