Mix it up with Sangria this Summer

Are you ready to heat up the summer scene with a backyard bash? It's time to impress your guests and think outside the beer bottle. You can spike your next barbecue with this superlative recipe for everyone’s favorite backyard libation.

Sangria is as easy and adaptable as the people from the Iberian region from which it hails. You can use red or white wine (1.5 liters) and an endless variety of fruits to sweeten this summer punch. Mix your wine with anything from orange juice to lemon-flavored soda (diet works, too, for the calorie conscious) to carbonated water. Toss in cut-up apples, oranges, lemons, limes, peaches, pineapple or grapes, squeezing the juice from the citrus fruits into the mixture. Add a ¼ cup of brandy to the brew for a little extra kick. And while you’re at it, pepper in a pinch of cinnamon. If it’s not quite sweet enough for you, add sugar to taste. Let it all sit in your refrigerator for three to 24 hours, serve over ice, and enjoy.
