Davuluri, a 24-year-old aspiring physician from Fayetteville, graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science.
After her crowning Sunday night, social media was abuzz with racist-themed criticisms. In her first news conference following the competition, Davuluri reportedly said according to The Associated Press: "I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."
Her platform throughout the competition was "Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Competency."
As Miss America, she also will become the official national goodwill ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and become the official spokesperson for R.E.I.G.N. Cosmetics, Joseph Ribkoff Inc. and Catalina Swimwear.
