Bankrate.com compiled the average cost for insurance, gasoline and repairs in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., to arrive that the average number for each state.
New York's annual cost puts it in the bottom half of the nation at No. 34. It costs an extra $331 a year on average to maintain a vehicle in New York than it does in Iowa, who is at the top of the list with an average annual cost of $1,942 per year.
Fellow Midwestern states Ohio, Illinois, Idaho and Wisconsin rounded out the top five.
The bottom five states were New Jersey, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana and Wyoming.
