Hudson Valley Girl Scouts Offer More Than Just Cookies

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- When many people think of Girl Scouts, cookies, badges, campfires and friendship bracelets often come to mind. However, the 104 year-old youth organization offers young women the opportunity to experience so much more.

“For me, Girl Scouting isn’t just about wearing a vest, taking trips and selling cookies," said Jade, an Ambassador Girl Scout from White Plains.  "It’s building relationships with other people, learning how to be a responsible person and making an effort to better yourself and your community."

Recognizing a need for better, more responsible community members, Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson helps girls form a sisterhood through troops across Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.

“Being a Girl Scout has taught me so much," said Keren, a 12th grader from Yonkers. "It has taught me how to be a responsible person, how to work well in community settings and, most of all, how to effect the lives of others around me. I always identify myself as a Girl Scout and it has become one of my proudest attributes.”

With roughly 30,000 girls and 12,000 adult members, Girl Scouts across Hudson Valley are becoming groundbreakers, big thinkers and role models. In recent years, Girl Scouts have designed robots, started garage bands and improved their communities—and yes, they still sell the best cookies on the planet.

Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson hosts an annual Leadership Luncheon, which serves as the primary fundraising event to support the organization's mission. Each year, they honor individuals, companies and organizations which help promote the Girl Scouts' mission.

This year's award recipients are:

  •  Leadership Award - KeyBank
  •  Community Service Award  - BASF Corp.
  • Humanitarian Award - Diane and Steve Anderson

This year's luncheon will be held Thursday, March 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase. Tickets can be purchased here.
