Data Suggests Link Between Heartburn Drugs, Heart Attacks

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A recent Stamford University study shows a modest correlation between the use of popular heartburn medication and an increased risk of heart attack, according to NPR.

Researchers gathered 3 million records of unidentified patients taking proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid and found an approximately 16 to 20 percent increased risk of heart attack, NPR reported.

Though there is a correlation, scientists aren't ready to swear off the drugs just yet as the data might stem from other factors, NPR said.
