Bamboo Plates Beat Paper for Al Fresco Dining

Do you wish al fresco dining involved less waste? Those end-of-the-party garbage bags full of used paper and plastic goods aren’t environmentally friendly, but now picnic aficionados have an alternative.

Veneerware is a line of single-use bamboo plates, utensils and serving dishes made from certified organic bamboo by a company called – wait for it – Bambu. You have a choice of rigid square plates in two sizes, seven and nine inch, or round plates in three sizes from seven to 11 inches. Prices range from $7 to $13 for a pack of eight plates. All products are chemical and pesticide-free and processed without bleach or dyes. Once you’ve finished eating, rinse off the food scraps and put the plates in your compost bin. The worms will love them, too.

Bambu also sells bamboo utensils so you can ditch the plastic. Sold in packs of 24 for $10, each set has 8 knives, forks and spoons, and they're sturdy enough to deal with most food.

In 2010, Bambu won the Eco Choice Award at the New York Gift Show for its line of sustainable kitchen and home products. In addition to the disposable Veneerware they sell serving bowls and cutting boards. There's also a line of dishes for kids. You can find Bambu products at Crate & Barrel and Whole Foods, as well as online.
