Australian Land Cruiser Ready to Submerge

As winter bears down and the temperature drops in Westchester County, Australia begins to look ever more appealing. But for car lovers, Australia’s looking a lot like paradise.

Toyota has introduced the Land Cruiser GX, a model manufactured exclusively for drivers down under who, as Toyota says, tend to “abuse and not just drive” their vehicles. It’s a barebones, get-down-and-dirty version of the iconic SUV, which you won’t find parked on any domestic suburban streets.

You won’t find any headrest-embedded DVD players in this tough mudder. With wheel firmly planted on the right side of the rugged vehicle, the Land Cruiser GX features vinyl floor mats, vertically hinged rear barn doors, 17-inch steel wheels and -- wait for it -- a snorkel. You read correctly. Not only can it ford deep water, it can snorkel in it as well.

But drivers heading up to the beach at the Great Barrier Reef should be warned: the Land Cruiser GX does not come equipped with a shark tank.
