Yonkers Raceway Celebrates Horses, Agriculture

YONKERS, N.Y. – Horses and agriculture have a long history together, from pulling a plow through the fields to hauling the produce to the market.

While trucks and tractors have replaced equine power in those endeavors, horses and agriculture will be celebrated Saturday when Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway hosts its annual Fall Harvest Festival. And while the horses in attendance will be trotters and pacers rather than draught horses, there will be plenty of New York State agriculture on display.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. trackside, and will feature horse racing, live music, and plenty of food, most of it locally grown, including cider, apples, cheese, peanut butter and maple syrup. Activities, such as pumpkin and face painting, a pie eating contest, and the third annual legislative challenge, which pits members of the state assembly and senate against each other in harness races, are planned for family members of all ages and interests.
