Chemical Extinguisher Helps At Northvale Machine Shop Fire
Firefighters used a high-volume dry chemical extinguisher to help with a machine shop blaze in Northvale. The Livingston Street fire ignited shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16. The Paramus Fire Department’s Foam Unit provided a significant assist extinguishing flames on aluminum shavings that were placed in metal barrels and brought outside. Crews remained at the scene until about 7:30 p.m. Firefighters who went into the building were sent to a decon station due to burning metals and materials. Rockland Cook Charged With Sexually Assaulting Child In Bergen
A cook from Rockland was arrested this week on charges of sexually assaulting a pre-teen in Bergen County several years ago, authorities said. Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said John Mark Dillon, 60, who currently lives in Piermont, sexually assaulted the youngster at least twice in Northvale, where records show he’d previously lived. The prosecutor didn’t provide dates. Dillon remained held in the Rockland County Correctional Center in New City, pending extradition to New Jersey, following his arrest in Orangeburg on Monday, Feb. 26. UPDATE: A candle ignited a blaze that ravaged an Old Tappan home near the Rockland County border on Friday, bringing firefighters from both sides of the state line, authorities said. A Rockland County driver died in a rollover overnight crash on the New Jersey side of the Palisades Interstate Parkway, authorities confirmed. Robert F. Purcell, 49, of Piermont, who was alone in his 2018 Lincoln Navigator, was pronounced dead at the scene, Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Lt. Raymond E. Walter said. Responders rescued a jumper who was hanging off the side of the new Tappan Zee Bridge. The report of a jumper snagged near the northbound Tarrytown end of the bridge came in shortly before 10 a.m., Friday, May 27, bringing a huge contingent of emergency personnel, including the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team. Responders rescued a family of lost, dehydrated hikers stranded in the dark 350 feet above the Hudson River. It was the fourth rescue in just two weeks from cliffs along the Palisades between the George Washington Bridge and the Rockland County border. Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Hudson River In Rockland
No one was injured when a small plane made an emergency landing in the Hudson River in Rockland County early Tuesday evening, authorities said. Piermont firefighters and EMS and Nyack firefighters were operating at the end of the pier while a Rockland County sheriff's Marine Unit towed the single-engine craft to shore, police said. The plane made the "controlled" water landing around 5 p.m. and was pulled from the water a little over two hours later, they said.

Piermont firefighter Danny Goswick was at work when the fire department received a call to rescue a dog in the icy water on the Hudson River near Nyack Beach.
