Officials in Sussex County are investigating the cause of a massive fire that ripped through several vehicles in a local parking lot over the weekend. The Hardyston Township Volunteer Fire Dept. responded to the blaze in the employee parking lot at 3 Wild Turkey Way just after 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, the squad said. A driver who was knocked cold when a rock crashed through his windshield on Route 80 reportedly collected $750,000 in insurance money. No one ever identified the owner of the dump truck responsible for the rock that severely injured Brian Lapinski, 48, of Hamburg, as he drove his boss's Ford F-150 on the westbound highway near the Rockaway Mall. A Sussex County man driving a stolen vehicle was found with a loaded handgun during a traffic stop, authorities charged. Jose M. Colon, of Hamburg, was charged with second-degree eluding, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and several other related indictable offenses following the traffic stop on Monday, May 30, Franklin Borough Police said in a release on Wednesday, July 6. Fire crews made quick work of a blaze that broke out in the basement of a Sussex County home Thursday evening. The fire was reported at 160 Mountain Rd. in Hardyston around 4:40 p.m., the local volunteer fire department said. The fire broke out at a home near Maple Grange Park in Vernon, the McAfee Fire Department said. The cause of a two-alarm fire at a vacant home early Saturday morning in Sussex County remained under investigation hours later. Flames shot out of a vacant two-story home behind Ballyowen Golf Club on Wheatsworth Road just after 4:40 a.m. The fire rose to two alarms, bringing firefighters from Franklin, McAfee Pochuck Valley and Hamburg to the scene.
