Newburgh Police Charge Illinois Fugitive With Murder NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Newburgh Police charged a man who is a fugitive from justice in Illinois with murder on Sunday, authorities said.  Kevin Cook, 59, was arrested after Newburgh authorities found Tanya Smith, 47, dead in a second-floor bedroom on Carson street just before 3 p.m., police said.  Cook, who told authorities he was staying with a relative in Newburgh, has an open warrant from the state of Illinois dating back to August of this year, officials said.  Cook was held pending his Monday arraignment on second-degree murder.

Off Peak Weekday Bus Schedule Continues For Port Jervis Line PORT JERVIS, N.Y. – Commuters who ride the Port Jervis line are reminded that bus substitutes will be used for off-peak trains between Port Jervis and Harriman until Oct. 27.  Buses will be used: Inbound (to Hoboken), all trains starting with the 9:26 a.m. from Port Jervis and ending with the 3:19 p.m. from Middletown to Harriman. Outbound (to Port Jervis), all trains starting with the 9:35 a.m. from Harriman and ending with the 3:48 p.m. from Harriman will be bused to Port Jervis. Buses will continue to follow the regular train schedules while track improvements are completed.

Mount Hope Man Taken Into Custody After Threatening Officers MOUNT HOPE, N.Y. – Mount Hope Police took an apparently suicidal man into custody on Friday morning after he also threatened to kill them, authorities said.  Officers responded to a 911 call on Jean Ridge Dr. Upon arrival James D. Fox, 26, threatened to shoot the officers and kill himself. Man Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter After Fatal Cornwall Crash CORNWALL, N.Y. – A Hungarian man admitted he was driving under the influence of alcohol on the night he crashed his car in Cornwall and killed his passenger, according to District Attorney David Hoovler. Andras Geiger, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on Wednesday.  Geiger crashed on Pleasant Hill Road in Cornwall on March 4. He admitted he had been driving in excess of 90 mph prior to the crash. Kiryas Joel's Split With Monroe Could Mean Huge Loss In Tax Revenue MONROE, N.Y. – If Kiryas Joel breaks away from Monroe, the Town could see a net tax revenue loss of up to $1.9 million, according to the Times Herald-Record.  Accountants from the Newburgh office of RBT CPAs held the forum to better educate residents about the proposed split of Kiryas Joel from Monroe to form the Town of Palm Tree. The biggest hit in net tax revenues would come from property and mortgage taxes, the Record reported.  Monroe residents will vote on the proposed split on Nov. 7.
