Wyckoff Detective Sgt. Joseph Soto traced the card back to the post office, where the victim had inadvertently left it behind, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said.

Fox said the clerk who waited on her, 41-year-old Dafnea S. Carroll of Muhammad Ali Avenue in Newark, immediately headed out on a break to use the card, apparently in an attempt to use it before it was discovered missing.

“The transaction was declined because Carroll did not know the zip code of the card holder,” the captain said.

Soto called agents from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and arrested Carroll on charges of theft and fraudulent credit card use. She was released without bail, pending grand jury action, Fox said.
