Morgan E. Lang, 32, of Carteret already was in custody in Phillipsburg for similar offenses when Detective Sgt. Joseph Soto produced theft and bad check charges on Monday, Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox said.
Lang on Nov. 17 "purchased $2,000 worth of grocery store gift cards that [St. Elizabeth School] was selling as a fundraiser," Fox said.
"Five days later the school learned that the check she used did not clear because it had been stolen," the chief said.
Lang, in turned out, "had stolen a number of checks from a relative and had used them in many locations throughout the state," he said.
Soto went to a grocery store where the cards were used and identified Lang from surveillance video.
Bail was set at $20,000 and detainers were sent to Phillipsburg police, the chief said.
Lang was sentenced in 2009 to six months in jail and five years probation after she admitted forging teaching credentials to work as a learning disabilities teacher consultant in the East Windsor district the year before.
Lang said she stole the New Jersey Department of Education teacher certification documents of a former YMCA co-worker and forged her name on the documents.
Authorities discovered the fraud after she applied for a teaching job in the Perth Amboy school district.
