OAKLAND, N.J. — Oakland native Karl H. Burns died Saturday, May 7. He was 91.
Burns grew up and lived in Oakland until his retirement in March 2001, when he moved to Eastham, Mass.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corp in November 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He was wounded May 4, 1945 in Okinawa, Japan, received the Purple Heart and spent 18 months in a U.S. Navy hospital.
Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, he went into business with his father and founded HP Burns & Sons, a hardware and garden supply store in Oakland.
He is survived by his wife Lisa (Nieswandt) Burns; three children, Michele Burns and companion Rusty Gallo, Lynn and her husband Michael Non and Ray Burns and his wife Kathleen; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Burns also is survived by his brothers, Ronald and Douglas; and a sister, Lois Bedell.
He was predeceased by his parents, Henry P. and Margaret S. Burns; sister Carolyn Marchesselli; and son Gregg Burns.
Relatives and friends may visit from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in Ponds Reformed Church Cemetery.
