But the 28-year-old isn't letting it get in the way of his dreams.
"I have a new reality now, and a new purpose."
Hoffmann, also formerly of Saddle Brook, noticed his right pec was deteriorating in 2011. He went to more than 25 doctors across the United States, and as they "racked their brains," his weakness progressed, the athlete wrote.
In 2015, he had his answers: muscular dystrophy. The disease is attacking his pectoral muscles, but he's not sure what it will take next.
"I don’t know when that will happen, because there’s no way to gauge the speed at which the disease will spread," Hoffmann said, noting that moving forward he will focus his efforts on finding a cure to help others.
"But please know this: This disease won’t keep me from achieving my dream of winning on the PGA Tour — and it shouldn’t keep anyone else from chasing their dreams either."
