In the video (attached) Ed Vallejo says he has driven in several different countries for work and also worked as an EMT, experience which has made him aware of some often overlooked hazards.

"I’m very aware of how cell phone and technologies like GPS are increasing the number of traffic collisions due to distracted driving; I would see those too many times as an EMT. That makes me work to stay attentive and alert on the road – the situation can change at a moment’s notice," he said in the video.

Vallejo's video is one of a series called "Voices of Safety" produced by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“We all share the road with large trucks and buses, and it’s critically important that motorists exercise caution and patience when operating around commercial motor vehicles,” said Raymond P. Martinez, an official with the DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

“With more than 20 years of driving experience, including time spent driving in all 50 states and in many foreign countries, Ed brings an important safety message to this campaign. We believe Ed’s suggestions for drivers will help remind motorists to be as safe as possible when driving alongside trucks and buses.”

More than 37,000 people were killed in motor-vehicle crashes on US roadways in 2017.
