An ad hoc search party was having trouble finding an important set of keys lost during an Earth Day cleanup in Elmwood Park, so Police Chief Michael Foligno called on the experts. Borough police had organized the community cleanup involving their officers, DPW and Recreation Department workers and Foligno's administrative assistant, Angela Fava on Friday, April 22. Fire Investigators Examine Fort Lee House Blaze
Firefighters contained a Fort Lee house blaze to a front bedroom after a passing lieutenant saw smoke. Fire Lt. Phil Craddock was driving on the Route 1&9 overpass around 4:45 p.m. Monday when he spotted the smoke coming from the two-story home at 2068 Jones Road just below. Firefighters knocked the blaze down in under a half hour. No injuries were reported. The rest of the house beyond the fire room sustained smoke, water and ventilation damage. Floodwaters had reached the bottom of their SUV's windshield when heroes from Norwood rescued a Demarest woman and her young son during Tuesday's downpour. It was one of several saves throughout the late-afternoon thunderstorms that rocked North Jersey. First, DPW Supt. Homeless Man Found Frozen To Death In Vacant Cliffside Park Building Identified
UPDATE: The family of a homeless Guatemalan immigrant found frozen to death in a vacant apartment in Cliffside Park won’t be able to bring his body home, friends say. A concerned friend who hadn’t seen him went to check the Palisade Avenue building near the Fairview border where Jorge Adalberto Roca had been staying with nearly a dozen other squatters, authorities said. Like him, Roca’s wife had suffered from severe alcoholism Roca’s wife, Virginia, died from alcoholism three months ago. Their children were placed with a caretaker in Fairview. Homeless Man Found Frozen To Death In Palisades Park Garage, Companion Hospitalized
A 35-year-old homeless man was found frozen to death and his companion barely alive Friday morning in a Palisades Park municipal parking garage, authorities said. The male companion was in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Hackensack University Medical Center, they said. A DPW crew found the pair sleeping on a mattress and called police at 9:40 a.m., said Capt. Anthony Espino, the officer in charge of the department. Packed Garbage Truck Tips On Route 17 Ramp
A fully loaded garbage truck tipped over on a Route 17 exit ramp late Wednesday morning. The driver was hospitalized with back and neck injuries after climbing from the rig, which rolled onto its side on the ramp from southbound Route 17 onto eastbound Linwood Avenue in Ridgewood by the Stop & Shop at the Paramus border shortly after 11 a.m. Ridgewood police, firefighters and EMS were joined by Paramus police. A police officer who was nearly killed when a gunman dragged him with a car, a trio of men in blue who revived a heart attack victim along with a group of firefighters who rescued a man overcome by freon fumes and two DPW workers who freed a trapped elderly driver are among several Englewood first responders recently honored for their heroism. Snapped Tree Limb Clips Hawthorne Home
A tree limb fell outside a Hawthorne home Tuesday morning, taking some utility wires with it. No one was injured after the tree missed hitting the Diamond Bridge Avenue house flush, nicking the corner of the roof instead. Hawthorne police and DPW workers responded, along with PSE&G. Ramsey Rescue Clears Chlorine-Laced Trash That Fell From Truck Near School
Hazardous materials technicians from the Ramsey Rescue squad cleared a pile of chlorine-laced trash that fell off the back of a garbage truck near an elementary school on Monday. Ramsey police, firefighters and Ambulance Corps members also responded to the Island Avenue incident near the Wesley D. Tisdale School. So did their colleagues from OEM, DPW and a Bergen County Hazmat team. "The scene has been mitigated without incident," the rescue squad reported. There were no injuries, the squad said.

: Resident, Two Dogs Escape Lyndhurst Fire
LYNDHURST, N.J. -- (UPDATE) A Lyndhurst resident made it out with two small dogs Saturday as flames engulfed the upper floors of a single-family home. Firefighters faced frigid cold in extinguishing the smoky Page Avenue blaze, which borough police Detective Vincent Auteri said apparently was sparked by a faulty extension cord in a second-floor bedroom.
