Uber To Pay Millions For Penalizing Riders With Disabilities, Federal Authorities Announce
Uber will forfeit nearly $1.8 million to more than 1,000 passengers with disabilities and refund double the amount of wait time fees to more than 65,000 others to resolve a federal complaint, authorities announced. Uber will also furnish an additional $500,000 to others harmed by the practice and will also waive wait time fees for certified riders with disabilities going forward, the Justice Department said Monday. UPDATE: A Hackensack man who suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was hit by a car in a supermarket parking lot in Saddle Brook reportedly received a $1.275 million settlement from a lawsuit. Richard Kunzweiler was 75 when he was struck by a car driven by a 66-year-old Fair Lawn man outside the Acme in Saddle Brook on Aug. 16, 2018, records show. Besides the traumatic brain injury, Kunzweiler suffered a C7 vertebral fracture, a ligament tear, a spinal cord injury and bulging discs and several broken bones, a suit filed in Superior Court in Hackensack claims. Hudson Company Pays Penalty, Damages For Denying Tour Bus Access To Paraplegic Army Vet
A Hoboken-based charter bus company that failed to provide access to a 74-year-old paraplegic U.S. Army veteran for a tour of Arlington National Cemetery has agreed to not let that happen again, authorities said. Asbury Park's Paramount Theater Agrees To Access For Disabled, Avoids Federal Lawsuit
The owners of the historic Paramount Theater in Asbury Park have agreed to install wheelchair spaces and companion seats while adding accessible ticket and concession stands, among other improvements, in response to a complaint brought by the federal government. A Norwood gym cancelled a child’s birthday party after learning that the youngster and guests have disabilities, said federal authorities who secured a court settlement requiring the company to ensure equal access in the future. Kateri Sullivan had been looking forward to the ice skating trip with her Midland Park Girl Scout troop. The 13-year-old has cerebral palsy but had an adaptive walker for snow and ice made four years ago that she planned on using.
