Child Dies Days After CDC Issues Nationwide Alert For Mysterious Hepatitis Outbreak
Just days after the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention issued a national alert to doctors over a mystery hepatitis outbreak, the death of a child has now been confirmed, the World Health Organization announced. A severely ill pediatric resident of the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation succumbed to the adenovirus Thursday night in an area hospital, New Jersey health officials said. Another medically fragile child with respiratory illness at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation died Saturday, bringing the total deaths among facility residents to nine, state officials said. Among the 25 confirmed adenovirus cases among residents, there have been eight pediatric deaths confirmed with adenovirus, according to the NJ Health Department. The department cannot confirm that the death of an individual who died Friday afternoon was related to the outbreak, officials said. UPDATE: Six children died as the result of a severe adenovirus outbreak at a North Jersey pediatric facility. The adenovirus mimics cold and flu-like symptoms and infected 18 youth with compromised immune systems at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, the health department said Tuesday.
