Cops ID Shoplifting Suspects Found After Crash, Hiding In Freezing Paramus Water

Two shoplifting suspects who fled from Target in Bergen Town Center on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, were caught by Paramus Police—one after crashing into a tree and the other while attempting to hide submerged in a brook, authorities said.

Just before noon, Paramus police responded to a reported theft at Target, according to Paramus Police Chief Robert M. Guidetti. The suspects, later identified as Tuwana Grant-Harrison, 32, and Christopher White, 47, both of Paterson, fled the scene in a black Nissan Murano before police arrived, he said.

Officer Diego Cruz spotted the suspect vehicle on Forest Avenue and Howland Avenue and attempted to pull it over. However, White, the driver, refused to stop and sped north, Guidetti said. Officer Cruz did not pursue the vehicle but lost sight of it as it entered Oradell, then later re-entered Paramus near East Ridgewood Avenue, he said.

A short time later, police received a 911 call about a Nissan crashing into a tree on Burlington Road, Guidetti said. Officer Cruz responded and found Grant-Harrison sitting on a lawn nearby while White had fled on foot, according to police.

A search was launched, and Lt. Matt Parrello and Emergency Service Unit Officer Matt Orefice found White hiding in the Van Saun Mill Brook, submerged in 12 inches of freezing water, in an attempt to evade arrest, police said. Both suspects were arrested and charged.

Grant-Harrison was charged with shoplifting by ticket switching and given a court date of March 14, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., Guidetti said.

White faces multiple charges, including shoplifting, eluding police, resisting arrest, possession of MDMA (Ecstasy), and possession of stolen credit cards, authorities said. He remains in custody pending a court appearance.
