For more than a decade, she was shopping in the Cedar Lane store. But these days Careccio, of Bergenfield, is manning it.
"I became friendly with the previous owner and when he was getting ready to sell the shop, he offered it to me," she said.
And I figured, what the heck? Let me give it a shot.
New To You opened at 449 Cedar Lane in 1994. Careccio bought the place in 2007. Seven years later, she moved three doors down to where she is now at 457 Cedar Lane.
She keeps the shop bright. Colorful. Fresh.
It's not too cramped and the racks aren't too cluttered, a refreshing change from many other consignment shops — there's ample room to shop.
Careccio's most popular items are pocketbooks. She's got it all — Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana, in dozens of varieties — mounted across the walls.
Furs hang in the back on a rack, and shiny beaded earrings and bracelets adorn the front of the store. Formal gowns and casual tops occupy the rest of the space.
Most items cost 75 percent of their original price. All items must be less than two years old and freshly washed when they come in.
Careccio splits the sale 50-50 with her clients.
"You have to know how to price things," she said, just after greeting a longtime shopper with a hug and a smile.
Careccio strolls through Bergen Town Center's markdown stores once a month to compare prices.
The last few years have been tougher — people want lower prices.
"But," Careccio said, "I'm still here."
