TEANECK, N.J. — Township resident David Berlin has opened his Asian-fusion taqueria, Salsa Metsuyan, next to Sushi Metsuyan on W. Englewood Avenue.

Berlin and his friend, Bernard Benlevi, raised the stakes for kosher eateries in New York City when they opened Sushi Metsuyan in 1995.

They brought the restaurant to Teaneck five years later -- and now, the addition of Salsa Metsuyan at 192 West Englewood Ave. is their dream come true.

“It’s a sushi chef’s hand with a salsa theme,” Berlin said. “We’re going to have all the stuff we’ve dreamed of having.”

Head Chef Joe Liu will prepare personalized grab-and-go style burritos, salads, rice bowls and tortillas. The taqueria will be open late with a “cerveza hotline” connecting the restaurant to Filler Up Kosher Wines, located down the block.

Berlin has the right idea, Liu said.

“I don’t see kosher Mexican places in this area,” he said. “Since many people in this area eat kosher, [Salsa Metsuyan] will be another choice on this block.”

Berlin believes his food is truly excellent — metsuyan — by anyone’s standards

“We’ve been a happy little place,” Berlin said. “Kosher people bring their non-kosher friends and keep coming back because it’s a quality sushi place.”

Berlin says he’s been playing with Salsa Metsuyan’s flavors for years and expects to do the same here.

“It’s a labor of love and self-expression of artistry,” he said. “It’s about giving people what they want in a healthy way.”
