A New Jersey woman is facing federal charges for trying to smuggle more than 26 pounds of marijuana disguised as Christmas gifts into the U.S. Virgin Islands, authorities said. Ceestra Burgess, 23, of Irvington, had arrived at the Henry Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix on a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale when, during a luggage inspection, a Customs and Border Protection canine alerted to the presence of drugs in Burgess’ checked bag, according to a release from the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Virgin Islands. Three Dump Trucks Crash On Route 80, Firefighters Say
A crash involving three dump trucks shut a portion of Route 80 Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 2. Hackensack firefighters were called to the scene in the westbound lanes where they found the three trucks and one passenger vehicle near Exit 64 around 1:50 p.m., they said. There were no injuries reported, however, a large fluid spill from the dump trucks required a DOT truck to respond and apply sand to the leaking fluid. Three Philadelphia men were indicted after two women were shot in the head in Atlantic City, including one who died, authorities said. A grand jury indicted 34-year-old Gregg Page for murder, attempted murder, and several weapons charges on Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release. A man died by suicide along a riverfront in Edgewater Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, police said. Officers called to the Hudson Riverfront walkway near City Place found the unresponsive man just before 7 a.m., Edgewater Police Chief Donald Martin said in a release. An 18-year-old Jersey City resident was arrested and charged on Tuesday, Oct. 1 after police found he hid a recording device inside a public restroom at a local mall, authorities said. Dog Scares Off Bergen County Burglars, Police Say
A pair of would-be burglars were scared off by one Bergen County family's dog on Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, police said. Little Ferry police say the two men cut through the screen windows in the front and back windows of the Summit Place home around 5 a.m. Then, they pried the windows open with a crowbar. An electrical fire at Hackensack Meridian Health's Hackensack University Medical Center broke out Wednesday morning, Oct. 2.
