Clifton School Teaches Volunteerism At Young Age

CLIFTON, N.J. — Clifton students learned about helping others at a young age this season with a holiday gift fundraiser ran by the district's preschool supervisor.

Danica Davidman, supervisor, said the drive for gifts for the underprivileged went well. The clothing and toy collection was based in the Clifton Early Learner Academy on Allwood Road but other schools joined as well.

"It's really touching," Davidman told Daily Voice. "The community sees children in Clifton as their children and they're really honored that people in Clifton are so generous and thoughtful about their fellow Cliftonites."

The district partnered with the Center for Family Resources to find people to help, Davidman said. The principals, mail-carriers and other district employees also helped spread the word.

Since many of the donations went to people within Clifton, Davidman said it was important to maintain privacy.

"Our goal was for them to feel respected and honored," she said.

Some of the most popular items included winter wear like hats, mittens, coats and boots.

Trader Joe's in Clifton also donated 300 shopping bags for the recipients to carry their donations, Davidman said.

This was the first such holiday fundraiser for Early Learner Academy, as the building only opened in September. Davidman said they hope to hold a similar collection for the needy in the future.
