The transformer blew just off Braen Avenue, near the Hawthorne border, as dusk fell around 7:40 p.m.
Firefighters doused some flames but had to wait for PSE&G to cut the power before they could get water on the source. Meantime, they kept it from spreading.
A short time later, they had the fire under control — and, eventually, out.
Goffle Road and parts of the surrounding area remained without power past 9 p.m.
