Cpl. J. Belanger began chasing Georgy Estevez, 24, of Jersey City through backyards after responding to a car burglary on Pleasant View Drive around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, Capt. Lawrence W. Martin said Thursday.

Belanger injured his foot, putting him temporarily out of work, Martin said.

Backup Officers Thomas Kartanowicz, Douglas Itjen and Denis Zamora picked up the pursuit and grabbed Estevez on Moro Drive off French Hill Road, he said.

"It was learned that [Estevez] had taken a family member's car to Wayne and parked it in front of a residence on Cecilia Drive," the captain said.

Detectives Anne Shivas and John Malenich retraced Estevez's steps and discovered that he'd burglarized several vehicles and stole property on MacDonald Drive, Howe Ave, Benson Drive and French Hill, Martin said.

Police "also suspect he may have entered between 10-15 other unlocked vehicles without taking anything," he said.

Estevez was carrying nearly $107 in cash and three gift cards -- Visa ($25), Walmart ($15) and mobile ($40), the captain said.

He also was wanted by Fair Lawn and Fort Lee police, Martin said.

A judge ordered Estevez held in the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing on various burglary and receiving solen property counts, as well as obstruction, the captain said.

" Residents are reminded once again to remove all valuables from their vehicles and lock their cars and house doors at all times to help prevent these thefts," he said.
