Adolph Tirri was taken to UMDNJ in Newark with what were reported to be a broken leg and hand and face injuries following the 3:20 p.m. crash.

“He was walking around, looking around, on the expressway, where the vehicles move really fast,” warned Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “People ordinarily don’t do that.”

The driver stayed with Tirri to keep him warm until the ambulance arrived.

His condition was undetermined early this evening.

“Both the regular and express roadways can become tremendously busy,” Della Fave. “People may be looking for their loved ones, or for the gates, as they come in.

“In both cases, as a driver or, especially, as a pedestrian, you have to be aware,” he said. “This one was out of the ordinary because of where it happened. No one expects to see anybody walking there.”
