Banks, a repeat offender wanted for breaking into an ex-girlfriend’s house and then slashing her tires, was being held this morning on a combined $120,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail. Several other police agencies have obtained detainers on him for failing to show up for court on charges in their towns, as well.
Nearly two years ago, Banks was grabbed along with other members of an offshoot of the infamous James Bond Gang burglary ring following a high-speed chase and crash while being pursued by police after break-ins at homes in Sparta and Jefferson Township.
Other charges stem from him threatening the father of a woman he’d been seeing with a broomstick and a belt, police said. Banks had been out on bail following a domestic violence incident 10 days before Christmas last year when the alleged attack occurred.
He also faces complaints of hindering prosecution, obstruction, criminal mischief and other counts from previous cases — and those are just in Englewood.
Besides the Morris County case, additional charges are pending elsewhere, including in Wayne.
In this weekend’s case, the tipster called around 11 a.m. Saturday, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
When Officers Lester Martin, Nate Kinlaw, Anthony Gonzalez and Reynaldo Rose went to the 3rd Ward address given, “they spotted Banks in the rear yard with a group of males,” Torell said.
Banks “tried to dash into the home’s back door, but the officers grabbed him and a scuffle ensued,” the captain said. “Banks was brought under control with no injuries being suffered to either him or the Officers.”
That only added felony resisting arrest to an enormous list of charges against him.
Police had been looking for Banks since Friday morning, when the woman called police “to report that [he] had burglarized the home, surprised her inside and began verbally harassing her,” Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT hours later. “When she told Banks to leave, he slashed her vehicle’s tires with a knife, fleeing the area before police arrived.”
An arrest warrant was drawn up charging him with domestic violence/armed burglary, weapons possession, criminal mischief and harassment, he said.
Torell then got word out to the media Friday night.
