The break-ins occurred around noon Sunday in the area of the Valley and Preakness shopping centers and parking lots of houses of worship, Capt. Laurence Martin said.

The thief "walks though the lot stopping at cars momentarily," Martin said.

"It appears he is electronically manipulating the car locks with some unseen device," the captain said. "Once inside the vehicle he steals money, credit cards and then locks the door again."

Martin asked that anyone who sees or recognizes him or has information that can help the investigation call Detective James Faber at (973) 633-3534 or the main Detective Bureau number: (973) 633-3530.
