“The wind is a major factor in this fire,” a witness at the scene of the Zachary Terrace blaze said earlier.

“It’s hard to see with all of the smoke blowing,” he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Firefighters from Fair Lawn, Paterson, Paramus and Elmwood Park helped put the fire out.

Some of them were inside when embers began to fall and flames grew hotter and higher.

So the fire chief ordered them out, and they tackled the blaze from the outside.

Early speculation was that the fire may have been ignited by an unattended cigarette. It began in front of the house and shot up through the eaves, an emergency services worker at the scene told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

It’s the time of year when dry and windy conditions make for fires that spread quickly.

Dozens of brushfires were reported across the state this weekend.

One of them, covering 1,000 acres in Burlington County, was still burning this morning.

A brush fire warning has been in effect in New Jersey since Wednesday.

The warnings include New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware, as well as some states to the north and south.

The Fair Lawn fires broke out within 15 minutes of one another.
