Narcotics detectives stopped the Honda Accord in the area of Preakness and Crosby avenues in Paterson after noticing that the driver, 23-year-old Arifur Rahman of Paterson, wasn't wearing his seat belt, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.

A strong odor of raw marijuana hit them as they approached the car, Berdnik said.

In back they could see three bags -- all vacuum-sealed and filled with pot, he said.

They arrested Rahman and his passenger, 24-year-old Nasir Chowdhury of Prospect Park.

After obtaining consent, detectives searched Chowdhury's North 11st Street home and found another half-pound of pot and $2,800 in suspected drug proceeds -- both of which were also seized, the sheriff said.

The total street value of the marijuana from both seizures was about $4,500, he said.

Chowdhury and Rahman were charged with possession and distribution of marijuana -- both within 1,000 feet of a school. They were released pending a court hearing, Berdnik said.
