Bergen Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Michael Rain of Cumberland County – 150  miles south – thought he was chatting with, and sending webcam photos of himself to, girls under 14 years old.

Rain is being held on a whopping $325,000 bail at the Bergen County Jail, charged with two dozen separate offenses involving attempted aggravated sexual assault, lewdness and endangerment.

Molinelli said the joint arrest, with help from the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, stemmed from “two independent criminal investigations” by the computer crime task forces from his and Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdik’s offices.

Detectives in each county were in chat rooms posing as girls when Rain approached them, the prosecutor said. The discussions “evolved” over several months “into becoming sexually illicit and graphic in nature.”

Rain “utilized a web cam device on seven different dates while communicating separately with both undercover detectives in order to expose and masturbate himself for his own sexual gratification while remaining in view.”
