Officer Tom Czekajlo was in his personal vehicle when it was struck around 2 p.m. yesterday at the corner of 49th Street and Avenue B in Bayonne, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

Both drivers got out and were exchanging information when the other motorist grabbed a large, zip-locking bag containing smaller bags from his car and bolted, Pentangelo said.

Czekajlo chased him a few blocks to Kennedy Boulevard and found him carrying two medium-sized bags that held seven small ones filled with pot, he said. He also found the cash, “which tested positive for narcotics residue,” Pentangelo said.

The contraband was all seized and the driver arrested, he said.

Nelson Alcaide, 34, Bayonne, was being held in the Hudson County Jail, charged with resisting arrest, obstruction, marijuana possession and marijuana possession within 500 feet of a public park.

Police also issued him summons for running a red light, leaving the scene of an accident and having drugs in  his car, Pentangelo said.

Czekajlo, meanwhile, was treated at Bayonne Medical Center for an injury to his left knee, he said.
