Liana Rodriguez, 18, also of Garfield, was headed north from Garfield on River Drive in a four-door silver Nissan Altima when it hit the man as he crossed from east to west at Garden Drive across from the Delta gas station just before 9 a.m.

There’s no traffic signal at that intersection.

Costas was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, was charged with having drugs in a motor vehicle after police said they found marijuana, Police Chief Michael Foligno told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time. She also received a summons for having a suspended registration and was released pending a court hearing, the chief said.

She wasn’t under the influence, he said.

Responders to the River Drive crash included the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office and New Jersey State Police.
