Berdnik's detectives were watching 47-year-old Alejandro Nieves on Monday as he sold 100 small envelopes of heroin to Albert Waring, 50, also of Paterson, outside Pike Motors on Montgomery Street, the sheriff said.
They followed Wang, seized the heroin and $7,700 in cash that they said he was carrying and arrested him on various drug-related charges, he said.
Nieves and his car were gone when they doubled back to the shop, Berdnik said.
The next day they went back and grabbed Nieves coming out of the shop.
He was carrying 250 envelopes of heroin, the sheriff said.
Nieves, who also owed $56,000 in unpaid child support, was arrested on various drug charges and the arrears warrant.
The sheriff commended his detectives.
Dealers "cannot shield illegal activity around legitimate business operations," he said. "No matter where drugs are sold, on a street corner or in business, arrests will be made."
The drugs seized from both men combined were worth about $1,750 on the street, Berdnik said.
