Investigators took 44-year-old Jamie L. Vasquez into custody after interviewing the girl, who is now 10, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said this afternoon.
He is charged with sexual assault and child endangerment.
“The victim recently disclosed to her mother what had occurred, who then notified the Garfield Police Department,” Molinelli said. “They contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit after which arrangements were made for the victim to be interviewed at a children’s advocacy center in the state where the victim and her family now reside.
“During that interview, the victim provided specific details describing how she was sexually assaulted on one occasion by [Vaszquez], who was in a relationship with a relative of the victim at that time,” he said.
Vasquez, who is single and works as a driver, has an arraignment scheduled for Tuesday.
