Robert Somers, 45, of Little Falls admitted in U.S. District Court in Newark in May that he handed the Lafayette Avenue bank teller a note on Feb. 17, 2016 that said: “This is a holdup” and demanded cash.
After getting some, he demanded more and got it from a second teller, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick said.
Somers then fled in a car identified by federal authorities as driven by Alehandro L. Ortiz of East Stroudsburg, PA. His case was still pending.
There's no parole in the federal prison system, so Somers will have to serve just about all of his sentence -- with a small amount of possible time shaved off for good behavior.
Fitzpatrick credited special agents of the FBI, as well as Hawthorne and Pennsylvania State police and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jihee G. Suh and Karen D. Stringer of Fitzpatrick’s Criminal Division in Newark are handling the case.
