Undercover detective Mike Garcia approached a parked Mercedes with Passaic Police Officer Barulio Barbosa when something went wrong.

Barbosa, who was in uniform, took a bullet in the leg and the Mercedes sped off, a enforcement official with knowledge of the incident said. Moments later, the crash occurred at the corner of Second Street and Clinton Avenue.

There are unconfirmed reports that the driver was seriously injured.

Shots rang out again as officers converged on the scene, with one of the suspects getting hit in the shoulder, reports say.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Despite initial online reports from a local newspaper that also appeared in print today, the victim is a man, not a woman. There also is no immediate proof of the newspaper’s claim that the officer was “shot by friendly fire.”)
