Manhunt ends for knife-wielding bandit in Elmwood Park shoplifting turned robbery

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A man who was wanted for pulling a knife on an Elmwood Park supermarket security guard last weekend – turning a shoplifting into an armed robbery — was being held on $25,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail after he was picked up yesterday by Haledon police.

Leonard Evans, 57, of Paterson is charged with robbery and two illegal weapons counts.

Police were called to the Pathmark on Broadway last Saturday morning after Evans pulled a six-inch knife on a guard who tried to stop him, Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

He then ran off towards Paterson, the chief said.

Detectives who reviewed security video identified Evans soon after.
