“It was a very frightening situation,” one officer told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He was texting messages asking [the boy] to meet him at a park or a house for sex.”

The boy told his parents, who immediately went to headquarters.

Detective David Boone and Detective Sgt. Brian Metzler then began monitoring the messages as they came in.

They arrested 35-year-old Ruben Melendez of Paterson before dawn this morning and charged him with stalking and luring.

Melendez is being held on $200,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, pending an initial appearance in Fair Lawn Municipal Court.
