Officers David Vega and Michael Direnzo stopped the car on Route 287 for an unspecified vehicle violation Friday night.

A 17-year-old Passaic County resident was behind the wheel, and an adult who “could not produce any identifcation” was his passenger, Mahwah police said.

During the stop, the officer “located marijuana in the center glove compartment,” the department said in a release. “Officers seized the CDS [controlled dangerous substance] and the occupants were removed from the vehicle.”

The passenger suddenly bolted, ruuning across two lanes of traffic and onto the grass median, where the officers caught up to him, the release says.

“A brief struggle ensued and the individual attempted to strike Officer Vega and tore his shield off the front of his shirt,” it says. “The individual was subdued and placed under arrest and brought to Mahwah Police Headquarters along with the juvenile.”

The adult was identified as 19-year-old Vincent A Rivera Jr., who is wanted on a warrant out of Marion County, Florida for drug-related and other charges.

River is being held on $120,000 cash bail, pending extradition, at the Bergen County Jail.
