Jersey City political consultant Jack Shaw, who was among those arrested by federal authorities on corruption charges last week, was found dead in his home last night. Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said a relative found Shaw’s body and called police shortly after 5 p.m.
Shaw, 61, had an unspecified medical condition. And although three independent sources told The Jersey Journal that bottles of pills were found near Shaw at in his Portside Towers apartment in Paulus Hook, authorities aren’t drawing any conclusions until the results of toxicology tests are in, DeFazio said.
Shaw, a major name in Hudson County political circles for decades, was accused of taking $10,000 in bribes. For a copy of the government’s criminal complaint against him, click here.
That’s why his arrest was among the most shocking: Federal authorities charged him with taking $10,000 from Solomon Dwek, a defendant in a federal case who agreed to pose as a shady real estate developer as part of an FBI sting. A criminal complaint says investigators have proof that Dwek suggested another $10,000 payment to a Jersey City official.
Shaw worked for years for Jim Florio while the former governor was still a congressman.
