The person he was hiking with dialed 911 after the victim collapsed around 1 p.m., Police Capt. Laurence J. Martin said.

The hikers were found on a trail about a half-mile from Valley Road and drew township police, firefighters and the First Aid Squad, along with St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center paramedics, North Haledon firefighters and police from North Haledon and William Paterson University, Martin said.

The victim "apparently suffered a medical episode and was found to be in cardiac arrest," the captain said.

"Attempts at CPR were unsucceful and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from St. Joseph’s through the paramedics on scene," he said.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office removed the body.

"There is nothing suspicious [about the circumstances] at this time," Martin said.

The victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
