Det. Sgts. Michael Musto and Joseph Soto brought theft charges against 22-year-old Arthur J. Garlick of Wyckoff following a weeks-long investigation, Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox said.
Garlick’s grandmother was working the polls at the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church when he took the 1999 Lincoln Town Car from the parking lot sometime the morning of June 3, Fox said.
“They reside together,” the chief said. “[H]e obtained an extra set of keys for the car and stole it, knowing that she was inside of the church for the day.”
A week later, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office reported finding the vehicle and charging the driver with receiving stolen property.
A prosecutor’s detective was working an Automated License Plate Reader in Paterson when the stolen car was identified, Fox said.
The driver, a 28-year-old Paterson man, told police that he’d bought if “from someone he could not identify” for $500.
Eventually, their relentless investigation led the detective sergeants to Garlick, Fox said.
The said reality, the chief said, is that addicts “will let nothing stand in their way to obtain heroin — even thefts from family members.”
Garlick was released without bail on third-degree auto theft charges. His case was referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
