The spill, first reported shortly after 3 p.m., covered roadway surfaces on Lincoln Avenue southbound between Harristown and Wagaraw Roads, and Wagaraw Road westbound between Lincoln Avenue and Ryerson Way.

Hawthorne firefighters applied absorbent material to the road surface before the substance could reach any storm drains. Hawthorne police diverted traffic, with assistance from their colleagues in Fair Lawn and Glen Rock.

A mechanical sander from the Hawthorne DPW was also brought in help dissolve the material.

Although authorities haven’t specifically identified the source, Hawthorne Fire Chief Joseph Speranza said it apparently came from a vehicle headed to the Hawthorne Borough Recycling Center off of Wagaraw Road.
