Hawthorne Forces Evacuations, Road Closure

HAWTHORNE, N.J. — Around 30 Hawthorne residents were briefly evacuated on New Year's Eve after a contractor working on a sewer line hit a gas main.

Police closed Warburton Avenue between Forest and Hawthorne avenues. Firefighters from Glen Rock and North Haledon remained on standby.

No one was injured, Hawthorne Fire Chief Joe Speranza said.

Police advised drivers to plan alternate routes.
